Grace Church School

“One of the city’s greatest treasures”*. One block directly west of Eighty East Tenth on Broadway and Tenth Street, Grace Church is renowned for its symbolic history and its contemporary academic program. And, in 1789, The Gothic Revival masterpiece was also one of the few locations in the city to break its strict grid thanks to a powerful influence that it still retains today.

History

History of Union Square

Downtown’s cultural hub meets open space. The park was designed to be a signifier of unity, its name, a marker of the city’s main thoroughfares, Broadway and Fourth Avenue. Today, Union Square retains its role in the community with a modern twist. It’s now home to the intersection of green fields, a world-renowned farmers market, community gatherings, and the retail shops that line its border.

Book Row

A storied neighborhood. The six blocks of Fourth Avenue between Union Square and Astor Place were known previously as Book Row. Literary shops lined both sides of Fourth Avenue and attracted their generation’s greatest writers: Jack Kerouac, André Breton, and Robert Frost among them, to the neighborhood. Today, iconic book store The Strand is the city’s last remaining bastion of this neighborhood’s literary past.
